On the Other End of the Line

Maybe you have experienced a time when you feel like you’ve been cheated on the account balance on your cell phone load. You texted only a few times, but when you checked your account it seemed that you’ve been texting the whole day. So you dialed *888 and the lady on the other end tried to resolve the issue.

Perhaps you love watching TV shopping channel because their almost perfect products amaze you. You might even have dialed the number flashed on the screen. Have you ever wondered who picked up the phone? Well, the one you are talking to on the other end of the line is actually a call center agent.

Last year, we heard lots of call center stories. Many are interested since international call center companies offer better salaries. Applicants with no call center experience can start at P15, 000.00 otherwise; they can start at P18, 000.00. Just compare that with other jobs, which only offer P6, 500.00 – P8, 000.00 as starting salaries.

People in the rich countries think that costumer service is a sick job. They prefer to do anything other than answering stupid question or get insulted by unsatisfied costumers. Here in the country, the call center is a leading industry. According to the Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP), the customer care industry is expected to generate 168,000 new jobs within the year of 2006.

A contact center doesn’t just offer phone support. It also supports customers through email, fax and chat. So if you are interested in this kind of job, it is important that you know how to use basic computer programs. Your typing skills should be at least 35 words per minute and you should be Internet savvy.

There are four typical support types in a call center. One is technical support which provides Internet or computer solutions to customers. Second is costumer service which provides general product support and troubleshooting. Third is travel support; they provide travel booking and accommodations for customers worldwide. Fourth is the Spanish support. Their job is the same with the other three; the only difference is that you’ll be talking to Spanish people. So, if you can speak Spanish you can go for Spanish support. What’s good in Spanish support is that you get a premium of P10, 000 and other companies even pay P30, 000 to P50, 000.

There are some who don’t survive in the call center because of the shifts. They have a hard time coping with it. Anyway, the key to this is enough rest. If you get the night shift you sleep in the morning and work in the evening and vice versa. After all, you are not always occupied in this job. Business depends on the queue of callers.

My sister who works in a call center says that being in a call center is exciting. You get to learn a lot since everyday you encounter new issues and new resolutions. The compensation is also generally exciting. Every agent who can get successful referrals is given P2, 500.00 to P5, 000.00 per referral. She also noted that most of her co-workers are honor students, laude or belong to top students in their class. She also has co-workers who are part-time models, which make it more exciting and enjoyable.

Asked what advice she could give to aspiring call center agents she says ”Being well versed in oral and written English is not enough. A call center agent must be perky, upbeat, aggressive, confident, enthusiastic, and motivated. He must have keen listening skills and fast problem-solving skills too. Remember, generally only 3-5% of the applicants are hired.”

Practice your English communication skills now for it is the most important factor for a costumer service agent. You should be proficient in written and oral English and an American accent is a plus. You have to let Americans believe that they are talking to someone from their own country. Who knows? Maybe the next time you will no longer be the one who dials the phone but you will be the lady/man on the other end of the line who would be resolving the customer’s concerns.

I wrote this last year… just have nothing else to do now… toinkzz

Premarital Sex & the Country

Many Filipino teenage females nowadays are pregnant or already have a baby. Some even got pregnant before they graduate high school. Is it because they have become liberated or because adolescence is the time of confusion and experimentation?

According to the 2002 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS), 32 percent of the Filipino teenagers 15-19 years old know that their single female friends are sexually active while 38 percent said that their single male friends have already engaged in sex. Research from the UP Population Institute shows an increase in sexually active Filipino youth among 15-24 from 18 percent in 1994 to 23 percent in 2002. You might not believe this but there are elementary students who have engaged in sex. Their survey shows that in the year 2002, 2.2 percent of both males and females have already engaged in sex before they reach the age of 13.

Based on their study, National Capital Region (NCR) has the highest rate of youth engaging in premarital sex. This is followed by Western Mindanao,

Cagayan

Valley

and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. In Visayas, Samar and Leyte has higher youth engaging in premarital sex, plus they do not use contraception compared to areas in

Central Visayas

.

Premarital sex is not always pleasurable. It has also lots of negative effects. It can destroy you. It can give you AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases especially when you engage with more than one partner and without the use of contraception. There is also a big risk of unwanted pregnancy. According to the study, half of the young females who have engaged in sex got pregnant and four out of five pushed through with the pregnancy. There is a risk that the unprepared mother makes another mistake by aborting the innocent child. Although some unprepared fathers may run away from the responsibility, three out of five girls who pushed through with the pregnancy eventually got married to the father of their kids. Yes, they might have got married but life nowadays is difficult and they are still emotionally unstable. Another disadvantage of getting pregnant is that you may stop schooling.

The youth have lots of different reasons when they engage in their first sex. Some reasons are because of curiosity, ignorance, peer pressure and stubbornness, some say to relieve sexual tension. Improper guidance or less connection with the family is another reason. Drugs, alcohol, media or regular exposure to x-rated movies are other factors to sexual activity. Sometimes girls just give in because they are afraid that their boyfriend will dump them if they won’t.

According to the study, 23 percent of the youth from 15-24 have had premarital sex with about 57 percent of the first sex experience unplanned and 70 percent with no contraception. We have learned about different negative effects of premarital sex, even before but there’s a new fact that could be very alarming. By the year 2030 there would be 160 million Filipinos and 128 million will be living in poverty. According to YAFS, this will happen if the sexual behavior of the youth will continue for the next few years.

If all of these things will continue, our country will be in danger. It’s not yet too late because we can still make a move against it. Aside from consulting to those reproductive health organizations and using contraceptives, the first big step is to decide for yourself whether you want to engage in premarital sex or not. Since we can not totally stop these teens from doing it, we could at least inform them of the consequences of premarital sex. After all, it’s their future that we’re concerned of.

Halloween.. Pagan Celebration

Why do Pinoys celebrate Halloween?... duh!.. Pinoys are just crazy over festivals and celebrations…

I just noticed that Pinoys are now celebrating Halloween.. costume parties here and there.. wearing masks and costumes, and wearing the faces of what there are actually afraid of.. (duh!... they are crazy.. ngakngakngak) and now, in some places, Pinoy kids are doing this “Trick or Treat” thingy…

Well, it’s All Hallows Day/ All Saints Day!... its in the calendar all over the world…  and Halloween means All Hollow’s evening.. the night before All Hallow’s Day…

The celebration for Halloween is not actually in our culture, the costume party, the trick or treat blah blah blah are American, and now, pinoy’s are copying it..  I hate to admit it but Pinoys are good in copying, it’s there talent… ngakngakngak

Anyway, Pinoys are still half innocent (is there such thing?) since Halloween is technically a Catholic

Holiday

… and it’s in the calendar for people to celebrate it… duh..

But the real question is, why do people have to wear costumes of ghost and goblins and everything else… hello?!!!... the Catholic Church created All Saint’s Day in honor of their saints…

Well, according to history, Holloween all began from a Pagan celebration.. I repeat, Pagan celebration… this is from a pagan celebration called Samhain which means death.. people used to believe that the first of November was the start of the season of death and good and evil spirits  gather that night.. and on October 31st people disguise themselves by painting there faces with monstrous face and wear wild costumes to scare away evil spirits and protect the spirits of their loved ones… (hahahaha.. now that’s funny… evil spirits afraid of your face.. ngakngakngak)..

And if it’s to scare away evil spirits, why are people wearing costumes that would make them look like the evil sprits (that’s according to what they think evil sprits look like.. hahahahah)

Anyway, Faeries which are not evil nor good also ran free on the eve of Samhain.. they would disguise them selves as beggars and go door to door. Those who will give them will be rewarded and those who don’t will be punished... that is how trick or treat really began

The catholic church created All saint’s Day, A Holy day to honor all the saints, this is to replace the pagan festival.. but since the Pope is avoiding riot that could happen if he ban the pagan festival, he just replaced it with All Saint’s Day… since All Saint’s Day is a holy day and not a festival, people celebrates both… and after 200 years, pagan festival is still present, so Pope Gregory III made the All Saint’s day to fall exactly on the day with Samhain… Kids were to go door to door begging for food for the town poor and dressed up as in costume to represent a saint…

Now Catholic Church thinks that they have gotten rid of Samhain, since they are also celebrating the All Saint’s day.. but the Celt’s (the pagans) thinks they are still celebrating Samhain since they still have their holiday with original ceremonies…

And as years gone by, the Celebration of the All Saint’s Day or Halloween evolved.. but it is totally untrue that ghost and goblins are everywhere in Holloween…  in

America

, the chilly and the mournful whistles of the wind simply means that winter is coming..

And Now I have seen from the news that some towns in the

Philippines

celebrates Halloween, wearing there most frightful and horrible (redundancy.. ngakngakngak) costumes… and paraded around the town.. duh, I totally don’t agree to that.. hello if it’s supposed to be for the saints, why are they wearing those.. it’s like they inviting the devil, it’s like they are honoring them… hello?!!! We are supposed to be Christians here… I thought Pinoys are known for their Christianity… it makes me think that Pinoys are known for their stupidity.. (ngakngakngakngak)… and now, there’s a place (what’s the name of that town again?) in the

Philippines

which celebrates Aswang Festival.. Hello?!!! Are they okay.. that is so not Christianity and that is so not supposed to be celebrated.. duh, Pinoy’s are crazy over festival that sometimes it becomes nonsense…

What to know more about Halloween?.. then use your search engine.. bwahahahahahaha
